The hub of the Isaac region, Moranbah is brand spanking new, in fact it is even called ‘‘the new kid on the block”. Moranbah was designed and built for the coalminers working in two principal open-cut mines and half a dozen smaller ones, and their families, and while the cost of living is somewhat higher than in Brisbane, it is a thriving, modern, prosperous town and the facilities and infrastructure are first-class and up-to-date.

The Goonyella and Peak Downs Mines and the smaller mines send coking coal to Hay Point by rail and it is shipped from there. There are an airport, an excellent hospital, a fine golf course and impressive sporting and educational amenities.
The remote but picturesque Peak Range is a chain of volcanic plugs about 120 kilometres south of Moranbah, where vehicles are not allowed, but there are giant spiders, bats and rare plants and wallabies. The Whitsunday Islands, between Northern Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, are only about two hours away.
