The city of Mackay is famous for its early 20th century Art Deco architecture and Dame Nellie Melba, whose father moved to Mackay in 1881 and built a new sugar mill. A recent Community Arts project has been responsible for almost 600 imaginative and innovative artworks being put up in the very heart of the city. Mackay’s 10-day Mazda Festival of Arts every July has been going for over 30 years and it is the largest in Queensland, famous throughout Australia for its exhibitions, performances and food. In 2018 Mackay was the surprise winner of Wotif, a popular travel website’s Australian Town of the Year awards, beating both the Gold Coast and Byron Bay.
